According to the Colorado Sun, the town of Ridgway in southwestern Colorado has approved a resolution to give the Uncompahgre River new protections. Ridgway follows in the path of Nederland, whose town council approved a similar measure last summer. Legal experts say the resolutions bear little legal weight because such protections exist now only for such water users as farmers, cities, industry and certain stream segments. But Ridgway town leaders say they want to be on the record as saying that rivers deserve the same kinds of protections that those who use the waters receive under state law.
