AZ Big Media reports that Arizona is preparing to implement its first major cuts under the seven-state Drought Contingency Plan (DCP) after experiencing one of the longest droughts on record. The drought has caused Lake Powell and Lake Mead, both filled by the Colorado River, to drop significantly. As of April 26, Lake Powell was down to 35 percent full and Lake Mead was 38 percent full. The “Tier 1” reductions Arizona expects are likely to come in 2022 will primarily impact Arizona agriculture, while higher priority rights are held by cities and tribes that won’t be affected under Tier 1.
