Briefly: Report says Utah, Colorado, New Mexico overusing Colorado River

According to The Spectrum, a recent report completed by the Utah Rivers Council (URC) regarding the decline of the Colorado River claims that three states, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, in the Upper Basin are currently using more water from the river than has been allocated. The report was released Monday and highlights the potential negative impacts of the Lake Powell Pipeline. Utah has previously justified its pursuit of the Lake Powell Pipeline project by claiming that the state never fully took advantage of its 23% share of the Upper Basin’s Colorado River flows. However, the URC report calculated Utah’s water usage as being 49 billion gallons over the allocated 23%.
