According to NPR, the western states are home to more than 10,000 rock glaciers, which are more resistant to climate change than typical ice glaciers. Rock glaciers provide vital water resources for surrounding communities, as well as rare and precious water samples. However, only a tiny fraction of scientists around the world who specialize in glaciers do any research on rock glaciers.
