The Washington Post reports that the Biden administration is launching a voluntary cybersecurity initiative to prevent hackers from contaminating or blocking access to drinking water. More than 150,000 systems serve over 300 million Americans currently, and are increasingly reliant on technology that can be vulnerable to cyberattack. The current plan involves outfitting water utilities with systems that notify plants about activity targeting industrial control systems that manage pumping, purification and other processes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency will also increase efforts to share information with utilities, and a pilot will be launched with a group of water systems that serve the largest populations.
