Briefly: New funding arrives for tribal water systems, but is it enough?

KUNC reports that 49% of tribal homes across the United States do not have access to reliable water sources, clean drinking water, or basic sanitation. Many native people in the Southwest rely on hauling water. To’hajiilee, a satellite community of the Navajo Nation located in New Mexico, has been working on the details of a pipeline since 2006 to deliver clean water, and secured a hard-fought agreement to build it in late 2020. Federal and state one-time funds are expected to help cover the initial $8 million in construction costs, but long-term funding is needed for operations and maintenance, officials say.
