April 22, 2012 represents the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, when over 20 million people rallied for the environment throughout the country, which directly led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Many hallmark federal environmental regulations followed, including the Clean Water Act of 1972, which prevents point source pollution discharges to rivers and streams and sets water quality standards. Earth Day 2012’s goal is to Mobilize the Earth to express appreciation for the planet and demand its protection, while promoting a Billion Acts of Green – setting quantifiable goals towards a more sustainable future.
