The Colorado Sun reports that as floodwaters begin to recede in southwestern Colorado after days of torrential rain, crews are beginning to assess damage. Many areas received record precipitation, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist. The rains caused rivers to flood, such as the San Juan River in Pagosa Springs, which rose to 15 feet from about 5 feet in two days. Governor Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency for 12 counties. Some counties, including La Plata and Archuleta, are preparing for another storm forecast for this weekend.
The Denver Post reports that the Colorado Department of Transportation on Wednesday requested $65 million in emergency federal funding to repair damage to three federal-aid roadways. Colorado’s Transportation Commission had already approved $5 million in emergency funds to help with immediate roadway repairs.
