Science Daily reports that New Mexico’s largest reservoir, Elephant Butte, fell to its lowest level since 1971 — holding just 1.4% of capacity as of July 27, 2026. The Rio Grande reservoir has since started to recover, with agricultural releases ending after July 28. The persistent drought and low water levels highlight concerns about the future of water along the Rio Grande for communities in New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.
