The Washington Post reports that a Saudi-backed agriculture conglomerate used its lobbying muscle, political connections and sheer wealth to transform a rural Arizona desert into a highly productive alfalfa farm, causing concern among state water officials over its water use. At the same time it created jobs and supported schools in rural areas that needed help.
