Briefly: Yampa Valley launches major soil moisture monitoring initiative

The Steamboat Pilot reports that the Upper Yampa Valley Water Conservancy District has begun work installing 25 high-tech soil moisture monitoring devices to help the district better understand how much dry soils will impact snowmelt and runoff as the climate continues to warm. In recent years, as the mega drought drags on, soils across Colorado and other western states have become increasingly dry, absorbing vast quantities of water from snowmelt before that water can reach streams and fill reservoirs.
