The Los Angeles Times reports that Needles, Calif., population 5,000, has been coping with high temperatures and the possible failure of its single remaining water well after three other wells failed to meet water quality standards. Recently, Needles received word that state officials intend to provide $2 million to help pay for drilling a new well. Needles, one of the hottest cities in the country, is currently trying to replace old and leak-prone pipes made of cast iron, asbestos cement, and copper, in addition to installing the new well.
