The Gazette reports that Donala Water and Sanitation District informed customers in Gleneagle and Monument last week about high levels of combined radium in their water supply. The district notified 27,000 residents that it had failed to comply with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s drinking water requirements. The limit of combined radium is 5 pCi per liter, but the district averaged 6.7 pCi per liter over the past year. Exposure to radium can cause health issues, including cancer. The district is taking steps to reduce the radium levels, but expects the issue won’t be fully resolved until August 2023 and has told residents they may want to use an alternative water supply.
