According to a new report from Business for Water Stewardship, the annual value of water-related recreation in Colorado is nearly $18 billion. The report utilized spending data collected by Southwick Associates for the Outdoor Industry Association and survey information that examined where individuals were choosing to spend their recreation time. The report analyzed statewide data for nine river basins and included responses from 1,253 people.
Business for Water Stewardship supports the goals outlined in the Colorado Water Plan, a plan to address Colorado’s long-term water needs, which are being stressed by a growing population, climate change, wildfires, and drought. However, there are concerns that the current economic climate might prevent the plan from being carried out. If Colorado receives more federal money to assist during the pandemic, the stewardship group is encouraging Gov. Jared Polis to use some of the aid for the water plan.
